Helen Martini longed to become a mother. Her dreams came true when her husband, Fred, returned from work at the Bronx Zoo with a tiny lion cub who had not bonded with his mother snuggled in his arms. Helen instantly embraced the cub--she fed him with a warm bottle, cooed him to sleep, and cared for him until it was time for him to be transferred to another zoo. In time Fred returned with more additions to the family--three small tiger cubs - and once again Helen sprang into action, tending to them until they were three months old. This time, when they returned to the zoo, Helen went with them, establishing the first zoo nursery. And later Helen became the Bronx Zoo's first woman zookeeper.
